A Win for California Nonprofits: AB 1318 Becomes Law
Dear Community,
Governor Gavin Newsom has signed Assembly Bill 1318 (Bonta), a significant win for California’s nonprofit sector.
AB 1318, sponsored by CalNonprofits, ensures that nonprofits will not lose access to state funding if their federal 501(c)(3) status is revoked for political reasons. This protection comes at a critical time as recent federal actions have targeted nonprofit missions and jeopardized vital community services.
The new law expands the definition of a “qualified nonprofit organization” for state grants and contracts to include those with either federal or state tax-exempt status, protecting California’s nonprofits from politically motivated disruption.
