CalNonprofits is estimating that the California State budget that passed last Monday contains nearly $4 billion dollars in new, one-time funding for nonprofits. Much of this will come through state grants that will be on the state grants portal when they are ready in a few months. This is in addition to the federal American Rescue Plan Act which brought billions of dollars directly to local governments. It is critical that we continue to advocate to make sure nonprofits are included as those funds are distributed locally.
Thrive is speaking up to make sure that nonprofits get recovery funding. Thrive submitted a joint advocacy letter with the SMC Behavioral Health and Recovery Services Contractors' Association to the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors urging investment in strengthening and sustaining nonprofits for our local recovery. Discussions are ongoing with the Board regarding these requests.
Because we know that representation is vital to creating policies that support everyone in our communities, we continue to pay attention to redistricting, and districting for your local city, school board and special districts. Although we are still waiting on the census data (to be released September 23), it is not too early to start identifying your community of interest. We will host a training on September 2 on how to use the tools to submit your own proposed map. Our redistricting webpage links to information on the process in individual jurisdictions, as well as resources and recordings.
As always, please reach out to us with your concerns and campaigns.
In partnership,
Petra Silton, Director of Advocacy & Education
