Thrive RISE November Meeting: Preparing for a Wet Winter - Flood Insurance Explained

Wed, November 29, 10:00 - 11:00 am, Virtual

 

Last year’s winter storms caused millions of dollars in flood damages across San Mateo County, leaving residents without adequate insurance coverage with few options to recoup their losses. In anticipation of a wet, El Niño winter season this year, join us for a presentation and discussion with Emily Rogan from the nonprofit United Policyholders to learn about the differences in coverage between homeowner and renters policies and flood insurance policies, how to shop for flood insurance, and known challenges in the claims process. Community members are encouraged to join this conversation.

 
All organizations are welcome at this meeting, regardless of sector or experience in responding to community emergencies. Registration is not required for these recurring meetings. Please save this link as a recurring event on your calendar for the last Wednesday of the month.

This fun-filled celebration is an opportunity for the whole Thrive community to connect, enjoy holiday cheer, and savor delicious bites. This year’s event will be at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Community Space in Redwood City, where you will be surrounded by art created by local artists.

 

Don't miss out on connecting with old and new friends. We will also present our recently released 2023 Regional Nonprofit Report for San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties, discuss how this report has shaped our Thriving Nonprofit Workforce Series, and give updates on how we are developing our programs based on the reported challenges.

Environment & Sustainability and Basic Needs & Safety Net TAG: Build for the Future - Federal Funding Navigator Training

Thurs, November 30, 2:30 - 4:00 pm, Virtual 

 

Learn how to access federal funds with HUD's new Federal Funding Navigator called Build for the Future, which is a compilation of resources totaling billions of dollars in federal funding and tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act; Funding Navigator - HUD Exchange. The Funding Navigator helps nonprofits, local governments, affordable housing providers, private citizens, tribes and companies learn about Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) programs and see where they can apply for billions of dollars in federal funding and tax credits in these areas: Energy Efficiency and Renewables, Resiliency, Transportation, Environmental Justice, Workforce Development, Broadband, Utility Scale Energy, Lead and Healthy Housing, Brownfields and Waste Management.

 

"As a part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda potentially eligible entities will be able to sort funding resources based on audience, activity, funding type, location, and other items. The Funding Navigator helps participants maximize the utilization of IRA and BIL resources for carbon reduction and climate resilience efforts," (HUD press release, September 21, 2023).  Although this tool was developed by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, it features programs across all federal agencies.

The training will also cover the IRA’s new “Direct Pay” Provision (Direct Pay | Clean Energy | The White House) that makes clean energy tax credits available to nonprofits and local governments and review the IRA’s main programs like the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, Environmental Justice Programs, Conservation Programs, and Clean Energy Rebates.  

 

The training will be conducted by Jennifer Gottlieb Elazhari, who is Detailed to HUD Climate Advisor, Alexis Pelosi.

Arts and Culture TAG: Crafting Wellness - The Intersection of Arts and Mental Health

The utility of art in mental health and wellness spaces is often overlooked, yet it can be an essential component of growth and healing, providing individuals with an opportunity to express their emotions in a constructive and creative fashion. From painting to hip-hop to spoken word poetry, implementing different artistic mediums in therapy-based settings provides immense benefits to those taking advantage of mental health resources in addition to resource providers. Additionally, adding mental health techniques into arts programming can enhance the self-expression and creativity that comes with artmaking. 

 

This will be a creative and interactive space with performances, lively discussion, and action items. Join us as we explore how the shades of art in mental health spaces can help your organization connect with its members through creativity and mental wellness!

Voter Education & Outreach Advisory Committee (VEOAC)

Join us for the Voter Education and Outreach Advisory Committee meeting on Wednesday, December 6. Voting starts February 5, 2024!  Community organizations will share their strategic plans for voter outreach during the March primary. The County Elections Division will update us on their outreach activities and the resources allocated for March outreach activities. Engage in discussions surrounding the recently concluded voter outreach grant process, gathering valuable feedback to enhance future cycles. Additionally, we’ll review voting-related legislation from this year’s California Legislative session. Your presence and input are integral to our collaborative efforts.

 

Co-chaired by San Francisco Peninsula People Power, the County Elections Office, and Thrive Alliance.

County of San Mateo: Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for 2024 Measure K Funds

The county has been working to reevaluate the allocation of ongoing Measure K funding and the status of related contracts. This year, they have implemented a community engagement process to better understand current and emerging needs within the most impacted communities. Due to the increasing interest and engagement surrounding the Measure K Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) pre-proposal meeting held on November 10th, an additional pre-proposal session has been scheduled. The upcoming meeting will be held on November 28th, from 1:00 - 3:00 pm on Zoom. To learn more and RSVP click here. 

County of San Mateo: Assessment Appeals Board Vacancies

The County of San Mateo is seeking qualified candidates to fill three vacancies on their Assessment Appeals Board (AAB). The AAB hears public appeals to property tax assessments and may increase or lower such assessments in order to equalize the local tax assessment roll in accordance with applicable law. The AAB generally meets on the 2nd & 4th Thursday of each month at 9:30 AM in the Board of Supervisors' Chambers, 400 County Center, Redwood City. AAB members must be available for specially scheduled hearings which may last one or more days. A stipend of  $300/meeting and $50/training is offered for these positions. County of San Mateo: Drivers Urged to Pack Patience as Global Spotlight Shines on Bay Area

Street and highway closures, detours, and delays should be expected in San Mateo County as world leaders and others descend on the Bay Area for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference.

 

Roughly 30,000 conference attendees, including heads of state from the 21 member economies, dignitaries, delegates, and members of the media are expected for the November 11-17 APEC Economic Leaders’ Week. The White House has confirmed that President Joe Biden will be in attendance.

 

While San Francisco is the host city, dozens of official and unofficial events and tours are expected throughout the region. The County is activating its Emergency Operations Center as the centralized location to support local needs and assist regional partners as needed. To learn more click here. 

County of San Mateo: County Says Thank You to Board and Commission Members; Highlights Opportunities to Serve

County officials hosted a reception to say thank you to the residents who serve on advisory boards and commissions. From A to Y (the Agricultural Advisory Committee to the Youth Commission), more than 300 residents serve their community through boards and commissions. The evening event, held in the County's Regional Operations Center on the County Center campus, was hosted by Supervisor David J. Canepa and County Executive Mike Callagy. To learn more click here.
