Thrive RISE: Coordinating Staff Roles in Disaster - An Introduction to Incident Command System for Nonprofits

Wed, February 21, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, In-Person

It’s a sunny Tuesday afternoon. A local community center is distributing food in the parking lot, while volunteers provide childcare inside. Suddenly, the ground starts shaking and doesn't stop for a full minute. Would staff within your organization know what to do? How would they go about organizing first aid? How would they attend to clients outside and children inside?

Join this two-hour interactive, in-person workshop to learn about coordinating staff roles in disaster using four worst-case scenarios. Our facilitator, Heather Lee, from SF CARD, will provide a brief background on the Incident Command System (ICS), a framework that emergency workers use to efficiently organize and manage response efforts during disasters. We will then apply ICS principles to realistic scenarios involving nonprofits and community organizations.

As with all COAD trainings, this will be an opportunity to connect with other San Mateo County nonprofits that are active in emergency preparedness and response. This workshop is designed for nonprofits, but open to all.

HR Learning Series: How to Be a Dream Manager to Build a Strong Organizational Culture

Wed, February 21, 1:00 - 3:00 pm, In-Person

Recruiting and retaining staff is one of our biggest challenges for nonprofits, as identified in Thrive and SVCN's Nonprofit Landscape Report. During this first session of the HR Learning Series, we will review that data and present the Thriving Nonprofit Workforce Initiative which will address these issues.

Rafael Avendaño, Executive Director, of Redwood City Together, will lead an interactive workshop with a space for vulnerability and co-learning among nonprofit leaders to reflect on individual management journeys and management styles. You will learn about new methods that can support the organizational culture that you lead and how to become a dream manager. We will also be announcing the HR Affinity Group, which will serve as a way to stay connected and engaged beyond the training sessions.

Nonprofit leaders and HR professionals of all backgrounds and nonprofit sizes are welcome to attend this session. There will be ample time for sharing ideas over lunch.

The first 30 people to register will receive a complementary copy of The Dream Manager by Matthew Kelly, which we will be citing during the session. Don't miss out on this opportunity to enhance your leadership skills and come away with valuable resources.

Join this discussion to learn how you can support safe learning environments for children in our communities. Marla Petal, Principal Advisor for School Safety and Resilience for Save the Children, will discuss how education stakeholders across the globe are applying the Comprehensive School Safety (CSS) framework to make their children safer in emergencies. Mason Hendricks, Coordinator for School Safety & Risk Prevention for the County of San Mateo Office of Education, will then speak to the trailblazing emergency management work his office has done for San Mateo County schools.

Sanchez Art Center: Gary Bukovnik Forever Spring

Fri, February 23, 7:00 - 9:00 pm

Sanchez Art Center celebrates Spring and nature with three new exhibitions. Forever Spring, an exhibition of work by San Francisco artist Gary Bukovnik, is a celebration of exuberant flowers, showing in the Main Gallery. Gary Bukovnik’s Forever Spring gathers the artist’s floral artwork into a bouquet that exudes freshness and vitality. Clean lines bring each flower to life in both an elegant and joyful way. The exhibition combines works from the artist’s iconic Symphony series with newer pieces that reflect flowers and vases merrily tumbling about created in watercolor, woven in tapestries, on screens, and metal sculpture.

A master watercolorist, Bukovnik infuses each work with fluid, authentic coloration that brings a natural and intense beauty to each piece. “It is not often that beauty is the primary focus when I curate a show,” stated Sanchez Art Center artistic director and exhibition curator Jerry Ross Barrish.
