Arts & Culture Thrive Action Group (TAG): One Billion Dollars for Arts Education - What Happens Next with Prop. 28 Funds?

Wed, January 25, 1:00 - 3:00 pm, In-Person

On Nov. 8, Californians overwhelmingly passed Proposition 28, bringing a windfall of arts education funding to schools. While arts education is mandated in grades 1-12, each district must decide how to fund and implement it. The result has been inconsistent arts programming that leaves many children, especially those in low-income areas, with little exposure or access to the arts and creative forms of expression. Many dedicated and experienced arts education nonprofits have emerged to address this issue.

Prop. 28 will provide about $1 billion each year in funding to California public schools using 80% of the money on teachers and aides, and the balance will be used for art supplies and materials. How will this affect our nonprofit arts education providers?

Please join Thrive and the County of San Mateo Office of Arts & Culture for an enlightening one-hour panel discussion with Letty Kraus, Director of California County Superintendents Arts Initiative , and Allison Gamlen, Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator, San Mateo County’s Office of Education.

Following the discussion, we’ll have an open networking session for participants.

Environment & Sustainability Thrive Action Group (TAG): Rain, Rain, Drain Away

    Thurs, January 26, 3:00 - 4:30 pm, Virtual

President Biden made an emergency declaration for California counties impacted by winter storms that caused widespread flooding, mudslides, high winds, and power outages. As San Mateo County begins its recovery journey, we invite stakeholders to reconsider what we know about a "typical" flood event and explore methods for radically reducing our future flood risk through nature-based solutions. Join our panel of experts to learn about the complexity of calculating flood risk, regulatory frameworks for mandating green infrastructure, and community-implemented nature-based solutions.

Thrive Alliance's Community Resilience Director, Ana Miscolta, leading the San Mateo County COAD (Community Organizations Active in Disaster), will moderate our panel of experts:

    • OneShoreline Project Manager, Makena Wong, will present an overview of flood risk in San Mateo County and categories of mitigation.

    • County/City Association of Governments (C/CAG) for San Mateo County Senior Program Specialist, Reid Bogert, will address the regulatory framework for and government implementation of green infrastructure.

    • Climate Resilient Communities Resilient Adaptation Program Manager, Cade Cannedy, will share a case study of locally-implemented green infrastructure and recommend duplicating those efforts in other communities.

    • Peninsula Clean Energy Senior Manager of Community Relations, Kirsten Andrews-Schwind, will share the Home Upgrade programs available to residents who have been affected by the storms.

    • Resource Conservation District San Mateo Executive Director, Kellyx Nelson, will present their work on nature-based solutions for climate mitigation, watershed protection to mitigate disasters, and emergency response to mitigate hazards after a fire or flooding.

Following that, we will open up to discussion.

Silicon Valley Community Foundation (SVCF): Nonprofit Survey Results

In early 2022, Silicon Valley Community Foundation (SVCF) launched a formal, third-party, anonymous survey to ask how you perceive the community foundation.

Why did they launch this survey? In line with SVCF's organizational values of courage, collaboration, inclusion, respect, and accountability, the organization followed up on the community listening sessions held prior to the pandemic to share their updated vision, priorities, and actions, and ask the nonprofit community: “Do you feel like we heard you?”

SVCF is grateful to the 230 respondents that gave their time to complete the survey, sharing their valuable thoughts and suggestions. Thank you! Your feedback helps the nonprofit sector continue to reflect, adjust and become more effective partners.

From SVCF's President & CEO, Nicole Taylor:

We hope you will take a moment to review the compiled survey results and our learnings. As always, we welcome your thoughts, observations, and suggestions. View the results here.
