Nonprofit REDI Hub: Cultivating Connections - Exploring Cultural Humility in the Nonprofit Community
Wed, September 13, 2:00 - 3:30 pm, Virtual
Join Thrive Alliance and Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits (SVCN) in our Welcoming Week program! Welcoming Week is an annual campaign that celebrates the work in communities to become welcoming places for all, including immigrants. Many nonprofits play a key role in working with immigrants to support their integration into their communities. In this session, we will talk with leaders of nonprofits that work directly with immigrants to learn about their strategies for embracing cultural humility, lessons learned through their experiences, and tips and resources to support immigrant communities better.
The Nonprofit Racial Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion Hub (REDI Hub) is a joint effort between SVCN and Thrive Alliance to integrate Racial Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion into the nonprofit community in both Santa Clara County and San Mateo County.
Goals:
Uncover proven strategies and best practices that empower nonprofits working with immigrant communities to integrate cultural humility into their organizations.
Gain insights into concrete steps to center the immigrant community within your organization's structures.
Engage in candid discussions on overcoming obstacles faced while operating in diverse environments and systems.

The August Voter Engagement Brainstorm session identified what local community organizations are planning for outreach. Our September VEOAC meeting will be an opportunity to determine what areas of the communities need additional outreach and make plans for other forms of engagement and collaboration.
We will also receive updates from the San Mateo County Elections Office.
Co-chaired by San Francisco Peninsula People Power, the County Elections Office, and Thrive Alliance.

The County Asked You To Attend a Listening Session and Take a Survey: What Are the Next Steps?
The County hosted a series of listening sessions and created an online survey where residents were encouraged to share their needs concerning children and families, housing and homelessness, emergency preparedness, and mental health. Now that the listening sessions have concluded and the survey is closed, the results will be presented to the public and the Board of Supervisors in a study session at its Oct. 3 regular meeting.
At the Oct. 17 Board Meeting, the staff will propose a plan for the following two months to collect proposals from community-based organizations, nonprofits, and others to contract for work related to the Board’s identified priorities for Measure K half-cent sales tax dollars. Those proposals will be evaluated by a team of program specialists in January and February to be presented to the Board for consideration in March. Once these are approved, contracts will be developed and programs will begin in July of 2024. To learn more click here.

SF CARD: Agency Emergency Preparedness (East Bay)
Tues, September 12, 11:30 am - 1:30 pm
Organize your team to be ready to react and address the needs of your agency. In straightforward and inexpensive steps, this course helps participants develop, update, and maintain an Emergency Plan for immediate response, tailored to the individual agency, and designed to work in harmony with other community agencies and the overall emergency response structure. As part of the process, agencies will develop their knowledge and confidence in using ICS for Community Responders to empower staff and volunteers.
Following a serious incident, seamless communication between the community agency and those they serve, agency staff and volunteers, and county agencies is essential. To this end, SF CARD will help participating agencies develop redundant communication tools and work with them to “flex their communication muscle” during exercises.

Sustainable San Mateo County: The Climate Fight of Their Lives
Thrive Alliance is a proud cosponsor of this event.
Tues, October 3, 7:00 - 8:30 pm
In a historic climate first, a trial judge ruled on August 14 in favor of the 16 young plaintiffs in Held v. State of Montana. In another important constitutional case, 21 young people in Juliana v. United States are suing the federal government over its role in causing the climate crisis. Philip Gregory, one of the lead attorneys for these and similar cases, and two of the young plaintiffs in the Montana case, Sariel Sandoval and Kian Tanner, will discuss these lawsuits in a program called “The Climate Fight of Their Lives”.
Presented by Sustainable San Mateo County and sponsored by the Burlingame Parks and Recreation Department, this program will explore groundbreaking litigation on behalf of young plaintiffs who are bringing these cases by showing significant injuries, the government’s substantial role in causing them, and how a judgment in favor of the youth will change the government’s conduct.
Cosponsors of the event are Thrive Alliance, 350 Silicon Valley, Acterra, Citizens' Climate Lobby, Citizens Environmental Council, Climate Reality Bay Area’s San Mateo County Policy Action Squad, and Peninsula Clean Energy.
Note: Admission is free, but pre-registration is required.
