Thrive RISE October Meeting: Beyond Preparedness - Earthquake Mitigation in San Mateo County

Wed, October 25, 10:00 - 11:00 am, Virtual

This month, millions of Californians will participate in the Great Shakeout, an annual earthquake drill practiced by people around the world. While earthquake preparedness is crucial to helping us train our bodies and minds to properly react to real earthquakes, one of the most effective ways of keeping our communities safe during earthquakes is by strengthening our built environment to withstand shaking. This means reinforcing older buildings and infrastructures, and securing furniture and heavy objects in our homes, offices, childcare, and community spaces.

Sarah Atkinson, Earthquake Resilience Policy Manager at SPUR, will provide an overview of earthquake probability in our region, types of structures at risk of collapse or damage, and preemptive actions that San Mateo County organizations and agencies can take to help reduce the risk of earthquakes within their communities.

All organizations are welcome at this meeting, regardless of sector or experience in responding to community emergencies. Registration is not required for these recurring meetings. Please save this link as a recurring event on your calendar for the last Wednesday of the month.
