Thrive Resource Room: Local Media, Strategic Planning, and Your Nonprofit

Welcome to Thrive Resource Room, where you will hear about Thrive updates and learn about free and affordable community resources to help your organization!
Learn about opportunities for pro bono consulting on how to create a successful strategic planning process for your nonprofit and the importance of local media and how to engage with the press. You will also get an overview of Thrive member benefits and how to get more involved in our cross-sector network.
During this session you will learn about:
Launching a successful strategic planning process for your nonprofit: David Rhode, Deputy Director of PennPAC will discuss the key steps and considerations that will enable your organization to carry out an effective strategic planning process. David Rhode is the Deputy Director of PennPAC, an organization that utilizes University of Pennsylvania alumni to provide pro bono consulting to the nonprofit sector. Prior to joining PennPAC, David founded and scaled a global nonprofit organization for 14 years. He has his MBA from The Wharton School and teaches Nonprofit Branding at the University of Pennsylvania.
Local media impacts: Michelle Iracheta,Editor & Reporter, Redwood City Pulse, will speak about Redwood City Pulse's mission, and how it intersects with both the nonprofit sector and the community at large. Michelle will also discuss the impact of local media on the community and how you can spotlight your organization on the Redwood City Pulse website. In her career spanning nearly a decade, Michelle has covered mental health, public safety, disability rights, education, and city government. Her work has also appeared in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, The Seattle Times, and the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. She is the recipient of a first-place Blethen Award from the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Association and has earned recognition from nonprofit Investigative Reporters and Editors. Prior to joining the Pulse, Michelle worked at the Houston Chronicle.

Advocacy Training Curriculum Project Manager: Request for Letters of Interest

Thrive Alliance (Thrive) and Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits (SVCN) are seeking a part-time Project Manager (Independent Contractor) to coordinate our joint Advocacy Training Series. This series will support Thrive Alliance and SVCN in creating a regular advocacy curriculum to support nonprofits throughout Silicon Valley in becoming a community of change-makers and advocates by strengthening nonprofit staff advocacy and policy skills.
This is a temporary independent contractor role with a potential timeline between one and two years. Estimated weekly time commitment may be as many as 10 hours per week, particularly in Year One. The project is anticipated to begin in January 2023.
Scope of Work:
Coordinate between Thrive and SVCN staff, as well as stakeholders involved in curriculum development. We anticipate engaging with a number of other nonprofits to invite them to co-create input for curriculum development and to participate as curriculum faculty
Establish and strengthen the organization’s relationships with nonprofit policy and advocacy subject matter experts to facilitate training offerings
Research and vet existing training materials to support curriculum development
Support finalization of training content such as slide decks and scripts
We encourage proposals from BIPOC, immigrants, LGBTQ applicants, people with disabilities, and people with lived experience in poverty, or otherwise disadvantaged communities.

This year, Thrive explored a variety of wellness and self-care techniques to bring to our everyday lives through our Thrive Wellness Wednesdays program. Together, we learned about laughter yoga, mindful art, progressive muscle relaxation, medication, and more.

As our communities continue to recover from the pandemic, nonprofit managers continue to navigate uncertain economic conditions as they make decisions about employee compensation and benefits policies. The 2023 Compensation & Benefits Survey provides a wealth of information to help nonprofits make informed decisions about these key issues.
Published by Oakland-based Nonprofit Compensation Associates, the survey covers 48 Northern California counties. 728 nonprofit organizations reporting on more than 36,000 jobs participated in the 2022 survey, making it the largest and most robust in the survey's 44-year history.

California State Coastal Conservancy: Explore the Coast Grants
Application Deadline: Mon, February 27, 2023
The California State Coastal Conservancy is pleased to announce the availability of grants to public agencies, federally-recognized tribes and indigenous communities, and nonprofit organizations for programs that facilitate and enhance the public’s opportunities to explore California’s coast and San Francisco Bay shoreline through the Explore the Coast Grant Program.
Note: Approximately $1 million is available for this grant round. Applicants may request a grant amount of up to $100,000. Applicants should apply for projects that start in late 2023 or early 2024 and aim to be completed by January 2026.
California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire): Green Schoolyards Grants
Application Deadline: Fri, February 17
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire) has grant funding opportunities available for the planning and development of Green Schoolyards. Up to $117 million will be available for Green Schoolyards Projects. Eligible applicants include cities, counties, qualifying districts, or nonprofit organizations qualified under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Districts include, but are not limited to, school or park districts.
California Health and Human Services Leaders Issue Statement on Updated Vaccine Eligibility for Children 6 Months and Older
California Health & Human Services Agency Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly, and Director of the California Department of Public Health and State Public Health Officer Dr. Tomás J. Aragón, have issued a joint statement on the emergency use authorization of the updated (bivalent) COVID-19 vaccines in the United States for children as young as 6 months of age. Fuse Theatre: Cabaret Night
Fri, December 16, 6:00 - 8:00 pm
Join Fuse Theatre as they host their first official Fuse Cabaret Night and celebrate their friends at San Carlos Children's Theater (SCCT)! During this event, members of the community will be showcasing their art and music and Fuse Theatre will be fundraising for SCCT.
Note: Fuse Theatre's Melissa Modifer will be the host of this event. This event is free to attend. All donations collected at the event will benefit San Carlos Children's Theatre.
