Thrive RISE November Meeting: Preparing for a Wet Winter - Flood Insurance Explained

Last year’s winter storms caused millions of dollars in flood damages across San Mateo County, leaving residents without adequate insurance coverage with few options to recoup their losses. In anticipation of a wet, El Niño winter season this year, join us for a presentation and discussion with Emily Rogan from the nonprofit United Policyholders to learn about the differences in coverage between homeowner and renters policies and flood insurance policies, how to shop for flood insurance, and known challenges in the claims process. Community members are encouraged to join this conversation.

Environment & Sustainability and Basic Needs & Safety Net TAG: Build for the Future - Federal Funding Navigator Training

Learn how to access federal funds with HUD's new Federal Funding Navigator called Build for the Future, which is a compilation of resources totaling billions of dollars in federal funding and tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act; Funding Navigator - HUD Exchange. The Funding Navigator helps nonprofits, local governments, affordable housing providers, private citizens, tribes and companies learn about Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) programs and see where they can apply for billions of dollars in federal funding and tax credits in these areas: Energy Efficiency and Renewables, Resiliency, Transportation, Environmental Justice, Workforce Development, Broadband, Utility Scale Energy, Lead and Healthy Housing, Brownfields and Waste Management.
"As a part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda potentially eligible entities will be able to sort funding resources based on audience, activity, funding type, location, and other items. The Funding Navigator helps participants maximize the utilization of IRA and BIL resources for carbon reduction and climate resilience efforts," (HUD press release, September 21, 2023). Although this tool was developed by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, it features programs across all federal agencies.
The training will also cover the IRA’s new “Direct Pay” Provision (Direct Pay | Clean Energy | The White House) that makes clean energy tax credits available to nonprofits and local governments and review the IRA’s main programs like the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, Environmental Justice Programs, Conservation Programs, and Clean Energy Rebates.
The training will be conducted by Jennifer Gottlieb Elazhari, who is Detailed to HUD Climate Advisor, Alexis Pelosi.
Arts and Culture TAG: Crafting Wellness - The Intersection of Arts and Mental Health

The utility of art in mental health and wellness spaces is often overlooked, yet it can be an essential component of growth and healing, providing individuals with an opportunity to express their emotions in a constructive and creative fashion. From painting to hip-hop to spoken word poetry, implementing different artistic mediums in therapy-based settings provides immense benefits to those taking advantage of mental health resources in addition to resource providers. Additionally, adding mental health techniques into arts programming can enhance the self-expression and creativity that comes with artmaking.
This will be a creative and interactive space with performances, lively discussion, and action items. Join us as we explore how the shades of art in mental health spaces can help your organization connect with its members through creativity and mental wellness!
Join us for the Voter Education and Outreach Advisory Committee meeting on Wednesday, December 6. Voting starts February 5, 2024! Community organizations will share their strategic plans for voter outreach during the March primary. The County Elections Division will update us on their outreach activities and the resources allocated for March outreach activities. Engage in discussions surrounding the recently concluded voter outreach grant process, gathering valuable feedback to enhance future cycles. Additionally, we’ll review voting-related legislation from this year’s California Legislative session. Your presence and input are integral to our collaborative efforts.

Children & Education TAG: Candidate Questions and Education Summit - Outlining Goals & Outcomes

Thrive invites our nonprofit friends to share ideas, questions, and desired outcomes as we plan two big events for this February: the Choose Children Candidate Forum and the Summit for Partnerships in Education.
Thrive, along with Silicon Valley Community Foundation's Choose Children Initiative, will be hosting a candidate forum with a narrow focus on children and families. This Children & Education TAG will be an opportunity to share the questions you would like to hear at the County Board of Supervisors Choose Children Forum in early February. We will also have a primer on the differences in responsibilities between the Office of Education and the Board of Supervisors.
*Election begins February 5 and the last day to vote is March 5. Candidates from both district races will be invited to attend the Choose Children Candidate Forum.
We are also pleased to be holding our Summit for Partnerships in Education: Elevating Racial Equity on February 15. We would like to hear from you about your goals and desired outcomes for the Summit as we plan the speakers and sessions with our partners at the San Mateo County Office of Education.

Latinx Speaker Series: Latino Nonprofit Board Leadership in Silicon Valley

In 2022, Thrive Alliance and Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits (SVCN) surveyed nonprofits and developed the 2023 Regional Nonprofit Report for San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. On Wednesday, December 6, from 8:00 - 10:00 amyou will have an opportunity to join the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley to learn more about the report and view a presentation and discussion about the most extensive review ever conducted of Latinos in nonprofit governance.

Green Foothills Leadership Program is Accepting Applications
Deadline: Thurs, November 30
Green Foothills is currently accepting applications for its Leadership Program for 2024. The Leadership Program is for anyone who’s passionate about making change in our community. It focuses on environmental advocacy and social justice. Participants meet one Saturday a month from January through August. Six sessions are in person, and two sessions are virtual. Applicants should live, serve, work, or attend school in San Mateo, Santa Clara, or San Benito Counties. The application deadline is November 30, and applications will be considered in the order they are received. Tuition for the 2024 program is free.
County of San Mateo: Grant To Help With Housing for Farm Laborers
The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative has awarded a grant to the County of San Mateo to further efforts to build affordable housing for local agricultural laborers and their families. The grant comes as the County is working with the city of Half Moon Bay, farmworker advocates, farmers, and others to build more housing and modernize existing housing.
The $1 million grant will support efforts to build new housing at 880 Stone Pine Road, a city-owned site south of Highway 92 about a half-mile east of Highway 1. Together, officials from Half Moon Bay and the County are developing a design that includes detached prefabricated homes. To learn more click here.
