Environment & Sustainability Thrive Action Group (TAG): Inflation Reduction Act - Local Impacts of the Largest Climate Bill Ever
Thurs, September 1, 3:30 - 5:00 pm, Virtual
The recently passed Inflation Reduction Act is the biggest climate bill ever passed by Congress. It is large and complicated and includes incentives for homeowners to convert to heat pumps and install rooftop solar, tax credits for electric vehicles, advances for clean energy, and funds for strengthening climate resilience.
What does this mean for California, for local communities and organizations, and for our economy? How can we best take advantage of this new law and the opportunities available to us? Join us for our next Environment & Sustainability Thrive Action Group (TAG) as we explore these topics, and dive into this new climate bill.
Congresswoman Jackie Speier's Senior Legislative Assistant Alexandria Musser will present a summary of the bill. Acterra's Policy and External Relations Senior Manager, Jared Johnson, will address local opportunities provided by the bill. Following that, we will open up for discussion.

Nonprofits and Housing: What To Know and What To Do
Thurs, September 8, 9:00 - 11:00 am, In Person
Every city and town in San Mateo County—and the county itself—is currently drafting housing plans for the next eight years, work that will impact every nonprofit in the county and its clients. Called a Housing Element, this planning blueprint will determine in January 2023 how much housing each city will commit to building by 2031.
In a process that started in Sacramento, every jurisdiction is assigned how many housing units they must build at varying income levels, starting with very low income. The availability of affordable housing for the rest of the decade, an issue of huge importance to nonprofits and their clients, is being determined now.
Learn how nonprofits can affect the housing supply. Join the Thrive and housing advocate Yimby Action for an informative, action-oriented session. The panel will feature Jordan Grimes of Greenbelt Alliance, Jeremy Levine of Housing Leadership Council, Christine Padilla of Build Up SMC, and Kalisha Webster of Housing Choices.
Our minds, bodies, and spirits are each an important component of our being and contribute greatly to our overall sense of wellness. Join Thrive and the County of San Mateo Employee Wellness Team as we build strength in each of these areas, and learn skills that can be used daily.
This month's exercises are designed to help improve our minds, bodies, and spirits, and will feature music therapy, chair yoga, a journaling activity, and a collaborative and fun group poem.
Note: These sessions are not a replacement for professional guidance or counseling.
*Zoom information will be sent to registered attendees.

Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits & Thrive Alliance Nonprofit Racial Justice Summit - Call for Speakers
Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits (SVCN) and Thrive Alliance are hosting our second annual Nonprofit Racial Justice Summit this fall. The Summit is designed for the region's nonprofit organizations' leadership, staff, and board members to engage in dialogue about how to meet the promises made in the nonprofit racial equity pledge, as well as to gain tools and learn strategies to advance racial justice and equity within their institutions and in our community.
This year’s Summit theme is Healing Justice. We invite speakers -- panelists, presenters, trainers, and facilitators -- to submit proposals that speak to our theme by addressing ways that the nonprofits can act on their commitments to be antiracists through a healing justice framework at systemic, community, and individual levels.
We are accepting speaker proposals through Fri, September 9. The Nonprofit Racial Justice Summit is a hybrid event tentatively scheduled for the week of Mon, October 31 - Fri, November 4, 2022. Some sessions will be virtual (via Zoom) and some will be in person (in San Mateo & Santa Clara counties).
Thrive's Election Education Toolkit aims to amplify and strengthen voter outreach and education in traditionally less engaged communities by addressing the lack of knowledge about the process. Give this toolkit to leaders in your community for informal voter education. The toolkit is sponsored by The Grove Foundation, Atkinson Foundation, and Silicon Valley Community Foundation.
Email Yajaira Ortega, Thrive's Policy & Advocacy Associate, if you are interested in more information about receiving the stipend.
