Children & Education TAG - Peer Learning Series: Taking A Culturally- Responsive Approach to Student's Social-Emotional Learning
Thurs, October 28, 10:00 - 11:30 am
Coming out of the stress of the pandemic, students, families, out-of-school-time providers, and teachers are facing a number of social-emotional challenges. It is critical for students that providers help them identify emotions, acknowledge when those emotions are difficult or uncomfortable, and provide tools to help them process those emotions in a culturally-responsive way.
Join Thrive and MeghanMcDoniel, Postdoctoral Fellow with the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University, for a presentation on some of the preliminary work from an ongoing study evaluating a social-emotional curriculum. We will also discuss the most pressing needs for students this year, and relate the early findings back to what all adults can do to support students’ social-emotional needs. There will be space to share about your own social-emotional learning programs, and hear from peers.
We will also be joined by Joshua D.S. Brady, M.Ed., Education Administrator - Expanded Learning Division, California Department of Education, who will lead us through information regarding Expanded Learning Opportunities Program funding in AB130, how you can access current funding opportunities, and a brief Q & A.
Additionally, there will be updates about county-level funding.
This will be an interactive virtual event, and we encourage you to invite your team.

California suffers from a deficit of 3.5 million homes. This scarcity feeds poverty, homelessness, sprawl, and erodes the stability of the middle class, and has a disproportionate impact on Black and Latino households. Michael Lane the State Policy Director at SPUR, a nonprofit working across the political spectrum to develop solutions to the big problems cities face, will lead a panel discussion which will provide clarity on the intent of these measures, the likely timeline for change, and explore what they say about the neighborhoods of the future.
