County & Nonprofit Partnerships Summit 2023
Tues, February 7, 11:00 am - 1:30 pm, In-Person
After hosting virtual gatherings since the onset of COVID-19, the County of San Mateo (County) and co-sponsor Thrive Alliance invite you to join us at the summit on Tuesday, February 7! The County and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) aim to improve work relationships in meaningful ways. The themes identified over the last few years include open and honest workgroup settings to improve communication, support, and much more. The County and CBOs deeply understand the importance of partnership to positively impact our community members, especially those most in need, to the maximum extent possible.
Please join us to reconnect in person to discuss progress on joint effort recommendations, and explore opportunities to provide shared services to the community through an equity lens. County Executive Michael Callagy, County Chief Financial Officer Roberto Manchia, and County Chief Equity Officer Shireen Malekafzali, in collaboration with Executive Director of Thrive Alliance, Georgia Farooq, and Chief Executive Officer of Peninsula Family Services, Heather Cleary, will join us to provide updates on new initiatives and efforts. Thrive Alliance will also provide an update on the nonprofit landscape and Thrive RISE (Resilience in Shared Emergencies) in partnership with the County's Department of Emergency Management.
Thrive RISE (Resilience in Shared Emergencies): First Working Meeting
Wed, February 22, 10:00 - 11:00 am, Virtual
Join the countywide coalition of Community Organizations Active in Disasters (COAD), Thrive RISE, to begin an iterative process of organizing the nonprofit sector to respond to disasters. We will reflect on lessons learned from the January winter storms, learn about the mechanics of disaster response, and establish a work plan for preemptively reducing hazard risks between disasters and increasing nonprofit-government coordination during disasters. All organizations are welcome, regardless of sector or experience in responding to community emergencies.
*Zoom information will be sent to registered attendees
Thrive RISE (Resilience in Shared Emergencies): Coordinating Staff Roles During Disasters
Thurs, March 9, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm, Hybrid
Staff roles can shift drastically during emergencies; planning for who will take on what roles can greatly facilitate an organization's response to emergencies and orient staff to respond. This free 4-hour training will provide an overview of the Incident Command System (ICS) explicitly geared toward nonprofits and community-based organizations in San Mateo County, and organizations will then apply their new knowledge through group exercises. Participants will learn how to effectively prepare and coordinate staff to take on five roles crucial to disaster response and recovery.
Since the beginning of the year, San Mateo County has been hit with devastating rains and floods, impacting individuals and families across the community. With the recent tragic shooting in Half Moon Bay and the loss of 7 lives, the nonprofit community has had to rally again to provide critical support and care. It has been a lot and you all have carried a great deal over the last several years and now again as you have been called into action with the flooding and shooting of members in this community.
Thrive would like to offer you an opportunity to come together in community with each other to heal and to be cared for. We have engaged Jenny Niklaus from ALF Insights, the consulting arm of American Leadership Forum Silicon Valley, and long-time nonprofit leader and advocate, to lead us in two Healing Circles on Friday, February 3rd at Miramar Farms in Half Moon Bay. Miramar Farms is a local retreat location and sustainable farm. It is a beautiful and healing location. We are so grateful to Mark and Jayne Battey, Owners and Founders of Miramar Farms, for hosting us in this space.
There will be two healing circles — one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Each circle will be 2 hours in length. The focus of the circles is to provide:
A safe space to be in dialogue with other nonprofit leaders about the challenge and weight of responding to community crises.
A chance to think about impact at the individual, organizational, and sector-wide levels.
An opportunity to decompress through guided mindfulness-based meditation.
Jenny will work with each of the healing circles to build agreements and boundaries and will gently guide participants through a process that supports the needs of all in the room. There will also be a break for lunch after the morning circle to welcome the next group. Please register for the morning or afternoon group here.
Nonprofit executives and direct service staff serving San Mateo County are invited to register for a space in this special program. Please indicate if you are flexible on time when registering, as there are limited spots available. Carpooling is encouraged.
We will prioritize nonprofit participants whose organizations have been most impacted by these recent emergencies.
Please note that this is a space for community healing. We recognize that events like the one we experienced this past week can be particularly painful for some. If you are struggling and/or feel like you need more support than this circle can provide, please let us know and we will provide you with mental health referrals.
In Community,
Georgia D. Farooq, Executive Director

Wed, February 15, Wed, April 19, Wed, June 21, and Thurs, September 7
Kids develop concepts of gender, families, and love before the age of five; it’s important that adults have the information they need to support young children in feeling safe and confident in their bodies, families, classrooms, and world. They might wonder:
What everyday influences shape my child’s sense of what it means to be a “boy” or a “girl”?
How do I support a child’s exploration through play of concepts like family and gender?
What strategies can I use to encourage children to feel safe and confident in their bodies?
This webinar will use scenario practice and interactive games to demonstrate how to support folks all across the rainbow. It will be facilitated by Azisa Todd (Lead Trainer for the San Mateo County Pride Center) and Nathanael Flynn (Early Childhood Educator and co-author of Supporting Gender Diversity in Early Childhood Classrooms).
