Environment & Sustainability TAG: Rethinking the Way We Move - Active Transport for Wellness, Community, and the Planet
Thurs, June 29, 2:30 - 4:00 pm, In-Person
What would San Mateo look like if we could all walk or bike to our destination safely and benefit from active transportation? We know all the benefits to our wellness, community, and environment, so what challenges hold us back? Be part of a collaborative effort in partnership with Silicon Valley Bike Coalition to advocate for accessible and safer active transportation.
Key Benefits of Active Transportation:
Health & Wellness: Our speakers will share the positive impact of active transportation on physical fitness, mental well-being, and overall quality of life.
Bonds Community: Learn how shared pathways and bike lanes create opportunities for social interaction, inclusivity, and community engagement. Real-life success stories from community-based programs and members will showcase the power of active transportation in creating vibrant neighborhoods.
Saves the Planet/Environment: Understand how adopting sustainable transportation choices and reducing emissions can actively preserve our environment for future generations.
We will explore potential advocacy possibilities with both government and nonprofit advocacy experts.
Note: This event is free to attend, but registration is required.
If you require any other forms of accessibility to fully participate in our event, please let us know, and we will make every effort to accommodate your needs. Contact Tracy Flor-Figueroa at tracy@thrivealliance.org.

Join us for County & Nonprofit Partnerships Summit Part II: Measure K Listening Session.
The County of San Mateo is updating its processes for allocating Measure K funds and determining community needs and priorities. To ensure we have as much feedback as possible, we need to hear from you. *Please see the disclaimer below.
Measure K is a countywide half-cent sales tax extension passed by local voters in November 2016 to support essential County services and to maintain or replace critical facilities, providing local funds for local needs. Approximately $50 million will be distributed within these areas:
Children and Families
Housing and Homelessness
Mental Health
Emergency Preparedness
The purpose of this event is to gather your input on what the most critical needs, challenges, or gaps in service are.
The information you provide will help shape our conversations with the larger community during several town halls being scheduled this summer. Your voice matters, and this event offers a unique opportunity to contribute to meaningful change and make a lasting impact on the lives of those who need it the most.
Please note that this event is only for nonprofits, with a maximum of two representatives per organization.
The event will be held at the San Mateo County Event Center. A buffet lunch will follow. The deadline to register for the event will be Friday, July 7th, 2023, at 5:00 PST. Please be sure to register before the deadline!

After years of planning, construction is now underway on a 179-unit affordable housing project known as Middlefield Junction in North Fair Oaks, the unincorporated neighborhood south of Redwood City.
“This project addresses the most critical issue facing San Mateo County by providing quality new homes that are affordable,” said San Mateo County Supervisor Warren Slocum, whose District 4 includes North Fair Oaks. “Here we have a new development that is creating jobs during construction and in the long-term will create affordable homes that are close by many small family-owned shops and restaurants that will also benefit.” To learn more click here.

County of San Mateo: County Warns of Crackdown on Illegal Fireworks, Higher Fines for Violators
In an effort to crack down on illegal fireworks this Fourth of July, County of San Mateo officials are emphasizing the harm the booms, bangs, and sparks can cause to pets, young children, and entire neighborhoods. “When you light that firework, you get a momentary pop but the damage can last a lifetime,” said Mike Callagy, the County’s chief executive officer. “Every year dogs and cats run away and never return home, children are burned and homes and entire forests go up in flames. We ask that everyone stop and think about the consequences of their actions.” And those consequences also include a new slate of penalties for spectators, property owners, and parents or guardians.
