Thrive RISE Monthly Meeting: Extreme Heat Preparedness

Join the countywide coalition of Community Organizations Active in Disasters (COAD), Thrive RISE for our May Monthly Meeting. We will be discussing strategies for meeting community needs during the approaching summer months, with a focus on: 
  • Understanding heat impacts on health
    • Emma Hunter, County of San Mateo Health Emergency Preparedness
  • Community-based heat preparedness and mitigation
    • Ever Rodriguez, North Fair Oaks Community Alliance
  • County efforts to coordinate cooling centers
    • Kevin Foiles, County of San Mateo Department of Emergency Management
All organizations are welcome, regardless of sector or experience in responding to community emergencies. Registration is not required.

Thrive RISE (Resilience in Shared Emergencies): Communication and Coordination Between Nonprofits and Government in Disasters

Thurs, June 8, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, In-Person

 

Strong partnerships between government agencies and nonprofits are a crucial component of equitable disaster response and recovery. This 2-hour panel and discussion hosted at the Regional Operations Center in Redwood City will provide an overview of how nonprofits and government effectively communicate before, during, and after disasters to improve community outcomes. 
 

Panelists include: 

  • Don Mattei, Director, County of San Mateo Department of Emergency Management
  • David Pucci, Deputy Fire Chief, Redwood City Fire Department

San Mateo County Board of Supervisors Appoints New Health Officer

The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors has announced the appointment of Dr. Kismet Baldwin-Santana as County Health Officer to succeed Dr. Scott Morrow, who is retiring after 31 years of service to the County. Dr. Baldwin-Santana will join the County of San Mateo on Aug 7, 2023. Dr. Morrow will continue to serve as County Health Officer until that time. To learn more click here. 

County Celebrates National Foster Care Awareness Month

The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors has declared May 2023 as Foster Care Awareness Month, a time to recognize that everyone can play a part in enhancing the lives of children and youth in foster care. To learn more click here. 

Board of Supervisors Declares June 2 as National Gun Violence Awareness Day

The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to recognize June 2, 2023, as National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Residents are encouraged to “honor those whose lives are cut short and the countless survivors who are injured by shootings every day,” according to the proclamation introduced by Supervisor Dave Pine, president of the Board of Supervisors, and Supervisor Noelia Corzo. Board of Supervisors to Study Impact of Opioids, Fentanyl in San Mateo County

The Board of Supervisors will take a hard look at the damage fentanyl and opioids are inflicting on San Mateo County residents at a special study session. County Health will lead the study session titled, “The Opioid & Fentanyl Crisis in San Mateo County: An Overview,” which will examine the evolution and extent of the opioid crisis locally, share a recovering client’s perspective, note what’s working and where gaps lie and recommend actions. Pacifica Pride: 2nd Annual Pride Celebration

Visitors and residents are invited to gather at the Ingrid B. Lacy School for the 2nd Annual Pride Celebration and affirm community values, ensuring that residents of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expression are treated with respect and dignity.

 

Note: The parade kicks off on Palmetto Avenue at 11:00 am. From 11:30 am - 2:30 pm, the festival will be at Ingrid B. Lacy School with performances, tabling by local community groups, and a youth music area.

Acterra: Public Comment Workshop (Virtual)

Join Acterra for their upcoming Public Comment Workshop. These recurring workshops hosted by Acterra's Student Ambassadors Program (ASAP) are to help students (high school or college) build skills and confidence.

 

During this workshop, participants will:

  2. Get advice on speaking up and making public comments in settings like city council meetings and town halls

  3. Find out about upcoming climate action opportunities in the Bay Area where you can make a difference
