Join us for the third annual Nonprofit Racial Justice Summit on Wednesday, November 15, 2023. This vibrant in-person gathering, proudly co-hosted by Thrive Alliance and Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits (SVCN), brings together a diverse spectrum of changemakers including nonprofit leaders, staff, and board members, along with cross-sector partners such as government and philanthropy to champion racial justice and equity.
This year's Racial Justice Summit theme is Partnership & Collective Responsibility. We aim to unite local nonprofit and government partners and foster renewed commitment and collaborative efforts to enhance community outcomes, particularly for our most impacted communities. We'll take tangible steps toward forging a more racially just and equitable community with fellow nonprofit leaders and cross-sector allies. Together, we aspire to build momentum toward a more inclusive democracy with race and equity at the heart of all our actions.
We are thrilled to have Angela Glover Blackwell, Founder in Residence at PolicyLink, as our keynote speaker. Her long-standing advocacy for racial and economic equity, along with her expertise in leveraging public policy for positive change, promises to inspire and ignite meaningful conversations.
Thrive RISE November Meeting: Preparing for a Wet Winter - Flood Insurance Explained

Last year’s winter storms caused millions of dollars in flood damages across San Mateo County, leaving residents without adequate insurance coverage with few options to recoup their losses. In anticipation of a wet, El Niño winter season this year, join us for a presentation and discussion with Emily Rogan from the nonprofit United Policyholders to learn about the differences in coverage between homeowner and renters policies and flood insurance policies, how to shop for flood insurance, and known challenges in the claims process. Community members are encouraged to join this conversation.

Environment & Sustainability and Basic Needs & Safety Net TAG: Build for the Future - Federal Funding Navigator Training

Learn how to access federal funds with HUD's new Federal Funding Navigator called Build for the Future, which is a compilation of resources totaling billions of dollars in federal funding and tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act; Funding Navigator - HUD Exchange. The Funding Navigator helps nonprofits, local governments, affordable housing providers, private citizens, tribes and companies learn about Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) programs and see where they can apply for billions of dollars in federal funding and tax credits in these areas: Energy Efficiency and Renewables, Resiliency, Transportation, Environmental Justice, Workforce Development, Broadband, Utility Scale Energy, Lead and Healthy Housing, Brownfields and Waste Management.
"As a part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda potentially eligible entities will be able to sort funding resources based on audience, activity, funding type, location, and other items. The Funding Navigator helps participants maximize the utilization of IRA and BIL resources for carbon reduction and climate resilience efforts," (HUD press release, September 21, 2023). Although this tool was developed by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, it features programs across all federal agencies.
The training will also cover the IRA’s new “Direct Pay” Provision (Direct Pay | Clean Energy | The White House) that makes clean energy tax credits available to nonprofits and local governments and review the IRA’s main programs like the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, Environmental Justice Programs, Conservation Programs, and Clean Energy Rebates.

From painting to hip-hop to spoken word poetry, implementing different artistic mediums in therapy-based settings provides immense benefits to those taking advantage of mental health resources in addition to resource providers. Additionally, adding mental health techniques into arts programming can enhance the self-expression and creativity that comes with artmaking.
This will be a creative and interactive space with performances, lively discussion, and action items. Join us as we explore how the shades of art in mental health spaces can help your organization connect with its members through creativity and mental wellness!
County of San Mateo: Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for 2024 Measure K Funds
Earlier this year, the County of San Mateo convened a listening session for community-based organizations to better understand the needs organizations like yours may have when applying for and doing business with the County.
On November 3, 2023, the County released the Measure K Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), developed to lower organizations' barriers to applying for Measure K funding. A pre-proposal meeting for the NOFO will be held on Zoom on Friday, November 10, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, and will be recorded.
The NOFO process is entirely digital and will be conducted on the OpenGov platform. All potential applicants must register with OpenGov to apply to the Measure K NOFO.
County of San Mateo: County, Partners Accept $7.2M Grant for Emergency Preparedness & Community Resiliency Improvements
A $7.2 million state grant will help the San Mateo County Event Center serve as an evacuation center and safe zone during earthquakes, fires, flooding and other disasters, state and local officials announced. The grant from the California Department of Food and Agriculture will improve the center’s ability to shelter up to 600 people when needed. Samaritan House, a San Mateo-based nonprofit, is slated to receive a share of the grant to upgrade kitchen and pantry service, pending approval by its board of directors. To learn more click here.

Harvard Business School (HBS) Community Partners: Pro-bono Consulting Services

Harvard Business School (HBS) Community Partners is now accepting applications from social impact organizations interested in receiving pro bono consulting support from HBS alumni volunteers. HBS alumni are experienced in successfully helping businesses address tough challenges. Consulting Projects are an opportunity for alumni volunteers to lend their highly transferable skills to the nonprofit sector. These projects are three-four month strategic consulting engagements with a group of 3-5 alumni who conduct a deep dive to tackle a broad challenge or opportunity.
Silicon Valley Community Foundation & San Mateo County Voter Engagement Fund for the March 2024

This grant program will support Community outreach and engagement services to increase San Mateo County voter participation in lower-turnout voter precincts ahead of the March 5, 2024, Primary Election.
Grant Details
Grants will be for four to six months and up to $20,000
All grants will be project-based grants with clear outcomes
Organizations will be expected to join two cohort meetings and share updates on outreach
Organizations will be asked to submit periodic progress reports

Citizens Climate Lobby: Climate Change - What Actually Works?

Join Citizens Climate Lobby for a presentation about climate change action. During this presentation, they will compare climate change solutions using En-ROADS, a climate change simulation website created by MIT Sloan. They will also discuss why solutions are more or less effective and share easy actions that all of us can do to help. This is not a doom and gloom presentation, this is a presentation that is full of hope and meaningful action.
