Thrive RISE: Disaster Recovery Workshop for San Mateo County
Friday, August 11, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm, In-Person
Disaster recovery protocols should be in place before a disaster unfolds. As San Mateo County enters another high heat and fire season, and El Niño conditions indicate a wet winter, government, and nonprofits must be prepared to navigate future disasters that may match or exceed the scale of the 2022-23 Winter Storms. In addition to robust mitigation, preparedness, and response frameworks, our communities need to be familiar with best practices for rapid recovery from disasters.
SBP, in partnership with the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, and Thrive Alliance, is hosting a Disaster Recovery Workshop to share best practices and lessons learned with nonprofits, emergency managers, elected officials, and philanthropy to support the ongoing recovery process from the 2022-23 Winter Storms and better prepare these partners for future disasters.
Participants can attend individual sessions or come for the whole day:
8:30 - 8:45 am: Welcome
8:45 - 9:30 am: Toyota Production System (Making Disaster Recovery Efficient)
Join us for an engaging voter engagement brainstorming with San Mateo County nonprofits and partners. This session is designed to help organizations strategize and plan for the upcoming months, with a focus on preparing for the California primaries in 2024. We will explore innovative ideas, exchange best practices, and develop actionable initiatives to empower our community and foster active civic participation. Don't miss this perfect opportunity to make a difference in shaping our democratic process.
Lunch will be provided. Limited space. Please register only if you can attend in person.

County of San Mateo: Your Input Is Needed To Help the County Best Use Local Measure K Tax Dollars
The County of San Mateo has announced a series of listening sessions and surveys to hear directly from residents about their needs in four key areas. Residents are invited to share their experiences and needs on issues of housing and homelessness, children and families, emergency preparedness, and mental health. Residents are invited to attend a listening session and take an online survey, which is available in English, Spanish, Tagalog, and Simplified Chinese.
The information gathered will help inform the Board of Supervisors as it allocates funding from the local Measure K sales tax in ways that address the needs shared by residents and advance equity. Wed, August 30, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Two new recommendations coming out of Washington have the potential to bring about game-changing philanthropic reforms: the U.S. Treasury Department has recommended establishing payout requirements for Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs), a response to the current warehousing of billions of charitable dollars in these popular philanthropic vehicles. It is also proposing limits on how private foundations can use DAFs to meet their own payout requirements.
Catch up on where philanthropic reform stands today and where it’s headed with these interesting new efforts to create a more transparent and accountable charitable landscape. Join CalNonprofits and hear from a panel of in-the-know experts.
