Note From Thrive's Executive Director
Dear Thrive Community,
As many of you know, we recently published our joint Thrive & SVCN 2023 Regional Nonprofit Report for San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. This report represents months of investment of time and effort from our respective teams and partners. We are happy to share that we are already taking action on findings from the report in several tangible ways.
The landscape report provides a snapshot of where nonprofits report that they are at in their respective Racial Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (REDI) journeys. Overwhelmingly, nonprofits reported an interest in joint training and peer learning to continue to progress on their paths.
In addition, the landscape report highlighted workforce development as an "existential threat" to nonprofits, given recruitment and retention challenges exacerbated by conditions in our region. We are grateful to have launched the Thriving Nonprofit Workforce Series with the support of Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to develop innovative solutions to some of these challenges. We have recruited a Steering Committee composed of nonprofit leaders, workforce development specialists, creatives, academics, and more to guide us. Stay tuned for details on the series!
In case you missed it, we gathered 300+ local leaders for our Climate Summit for San Mateo County at the South San Francisco Conference Center just last week. The energy was uplifting, and we have concrete next steps in areas ranging from funding for climate resilience to strengthening partnerships. We are so grateful to our co-hosts Climate Resilience Communities, Nuestra Casa, and Rise South City. You can see a few highlights below, and stay tuned for a detailed recap in our next Policy & Advocacy Newsletter.
Finally, we are happy to share that we have been selected as a featured nonprofit for International Credit Union Day by the San Mateo County Credit Union (SMCU). For every completed transaction made with a SMCU card on Thursday, October 19, SMCU will donate $0.25 to Thrive!
In Community,
Georgia D. Farooq, Executive Director

2023 Regional Nonprofit Report for San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties
This report, based on tax data, surveys, and insights from diverse nonprofit leaders, provides a snapshot of the state of the challenges and opportunities facing our region’s nonprofit sector and highlights investment priorities for our community.
Earlier this year, we gathered at the County & Nonprofit Partnerships Summit 2023 to review preliminary findings from the report. Over 150 nonprofit and public sector partners joined for a day of learning and sharing and provided detailed feedback on both partnership innovations and ways to strengthen the relationship between the County and community-based organizations. This event was a wonderful opportunity to gather as a united community to discuss strengthening the relationship between the County and the nonprofit sector.
We hope that this report is a valuable resource for our nonprofit community and our public and private sector partners.

Nonprofit Racial Justice Summit
Wednesday, November 15, 9:00 - 1:00 pm, In-Person
Join us for the third annual Nonprofit Racial Justice Summit on Wednesday, November 15, 2023. This vibrant in-person gathering, proudly co-hosted by Thrive Alliance and Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits (SVCN), brings together a diverse spectrum of changemakers including nonprofit leaders, staff, and board members, along with cross-sector partners such as government and philanthropy to champion racial justice and equity.
This year's Racial Justice Summit theme is Partnership & Collective Responsibility. We aim to unite local nonprofit and government partners and foster renewed commitment and collaborative efforts to enhance community outcomes, particularly for our most impacted communities. We'll take tangible steps toward forging a more racially just and equitable community with fellow nonprofit leaders and cross-sector allies. Together, we aspire to build momentum toward a more inclusive democracy with race and equity at the heart of all our actions.
We are thrilled to have Angela Glover Blackwell, Founder in Residence at PolicyLink, as our keynote speaker. Her long-standing advocacy for racial and economic equity, along with her expertise in leveraging public policy for positive change, promises to inspire and ignite meaningful conversations.
It Was Wonderful To See All Who Attended the Second Annual Climate Summit for San Mateo County!

Executive Peer Coaching
The Executive Peer Coaching Series for nonprofit executives has officially kicked off! Cohorts will participate in monthly 90-minute sessions facilitated by Bart Charlow, retired CEO of Samaritan House, to gain guidance and support from peers in a facilitated, confidential setting.
Although the window to sign up for the inaugural groups is closed, please reach out to our Programs & Operations Manager Keirstan if you are interested in future cohorts.
Opportunities for peer learning among nonprofit leaders can be limited, difficult to time, and expensive. Nonprofit executives need access to a safe space to talk ideas through with like-minded peers in order to scale their organizations and prioritize growth. We are here to help.

Spotlight Interpreter: Brenda Graciano
Since the launch of the Translation Service Hub, Thrive has worked with various interpreters and translators across the county in the last couple of months to ensure linguistic equity for our community. We are so grateful to have partnered with Upward Scholars, a Latinx-led organization that provides adult immigrants the boost they need to move up the economic ladder through education and career development support. Upward Scholar’s ¡Habla Más! program provides interpreters with interpretation equipment, educational training, and emotional support. Meet Brenda Graciano, a Spanish Conversational Tutor and Interpreter through the Upward Scholars program. She has worked with nonprofits such as MUA, SV2, Puente, Los Altos Community Foundation, Compassion Week, and private companies such as Zander Design and Lives in the Balance. This program began with an opportunity to generate income at the beginning of the pandemic, and it has flourished into her passion and a long-term career.
