Note From Thrive's Executive Director
Dear Thrive Community,
Thanks to the 400+ of you who have filled out the joint Thrive-SVCN nonprofit survey. For those who haven’t yet, you have until the end of today - don’t delay!
Our annual Holiday Mix & Mingle will be a fun, festive, and celebratory event. We’re excited to gather with many of you at AbilityPath’s new outdoor space and to honor outgoing nonprofit executives BartCharlow of Samaritan House and JanMasaoka of CalNonprofits, longtime friends, and advocates for our community.
Happy holidays from the Thrive Team!
In Community,
Georgia D. Farooq, Executive Director
We Need Your Expert Input!
2023 Regional Nonprofit Priorities Survey
Deadline end of the day TODAY, November 30!
This year, Thrive Alliance and Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits (SVCN) are joining resources to assess nonprofit needs and priorities on a regional basis. Our plan is to use your input from the 2023 Regional Nonprofit Priorities Survey to set each of our organizations' calendar year priorities.
You are the experts in what nonprofits need as we support the creation of thriving and equitable communities. Please pass this survey on to your nonprofit colleagues and friends. The survey takes less than 10 minutes to complete.
We will be publishing a joint report about the current nonprofit landscape across Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. The report will be grounded in tax data and enhanced by your survey data. That's why we need to hear from a wide swath of Silicon Valley nonprofit staff, executives, and board members.
We are looking for a technical writer and a graphic designer to help with this work! More information and apply here.
Join us for Thrive's Sixth Annual Holiday Mix & Mingle on Wed, December 14, 11:30 - 1:00 pm. Come and share some holiday cheer, and enjoy lunch and live jazz music, and you will also walk away with a goodie bag of the Thrive team’s famous homemade holiday cookies! We are thrilled to be hosting this year’s event at member organization AbilityPath's new outdoor space.
We will also take this time to honor and thank two close friends of Thrive: Bart Charlow, who is retiring as CEO of Samaritan House after an impactful eight years of fighting poverty, and who has served on Thrive’s Policy & Advocacy Steering Committee since day one; and Jan Masaoka, who is closing her chapter as CEO of CalNonprofits, after more than a decade of service strengthening California's nonprofits. You can read more about Bart's impact at Samaritan House here, and learn about Jan's successes at CalNonprofits here. Join us as we thank them for all they have done for our local community and sector!
On behalf of Thrive Alliance and Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits, thank you to those who joined us for the Second Annual Nonprofit Racial Justice Summit. During the summit, we were inspired by what our speakers shared with us, and we hope that our sessions will challenge organizations to grow in their support of a more equitable society.
Day two featured artists from both counties showcasing how art intersects with racial equity. San Mateo's Art is Healing session began with Casa Circulo Cultural's programming to celebrate the Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) Holiday. We created Marigold (Cempasuchil) flowers, which symbolize the brevity of life. Then Daly City Youth Poet Laureate Program poets led us through an activity to learn how to write black-out poetry.
The Breaking Barriers & Building Power session featured elected officials and commissioners raising critical points about the sacrifices and challenges, as well as inspiring moments, of being a woman of color serving in public office. Marico Sayoc encourages us to stand in solidarity with those who continue to break barriers and build power for our communities.
Lived Experience Boards: Why and How highlighted the benefits of having a lived experience board or advisory board. Chad Bojorquez opened the webinar with some words of encouragement for those interested in bringing the most impacted people to the decision table.
To end the summit with some practical next steps, Irma Zoepf introduced a healing trauma-informed organizational change model. During Healing Justice: Applying a Trauma-Informed Model to Create an Anti-Racist Organizational Culture, she introduced the framework of the Sanctuary Model, which includes Trauma Theory, The Seven Commitments, the SELF Framework, and the Sanctuary Toolkit. The audience could reflect on their experience and share the exercise with others.
Thank you to the following sponsors for helping to make the Second Annual Nonprofit Racial Justice Summit possible:
Does Your Nonprofit Need Translation or Interpretation Services?

Our vision for the local nonprofit sector is one that prioritizes community access by consistently and mindfully offering professional language translation and interpretation services for its programs and services. We want to create a culture of practice by making this top-of-mind, accessible, and affordable for nonprofits. These services are made possible through the generous philanthropic support of the Silicon Valley Community Foundation (SVCF).

Environment & Sustainability: Blogs and What's Next?
October proved successful for Thrive's Environment & Sustainability community as we completed our first annual Climate Summit for San Mateo County. We loved seeing so many community members in the same room and the discussions that the summit inspired.
This month, we met for an in-person Environment & Sustainability Thrive Action Group (TAG) meeting to discuss how to use the foundation of the collective commitments made at the Climate Summit for San Mateo County and develop actionable strategies for utilizing them.
