Note From Thrive Executive Director
Dear Community,
After two years of virtual connection, we will be gathering in-person to launch our Thrive Nonprofit Connection Series at the CZI Community Space in Redwood City, thanks to support from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.
At this special Leadership Circle Luncheon, we will:
Reconnect as a nonprofit community over lunch, art, and networking
Preview Thrive & CZI's Nonprofit Connection Series calendar
Present Thrive’s Strategic Alliances Initiative recommendations and actions taken, including the launch of a COAD (Community Organizations Active in Disaster)
Nonprofit executives are encouraged to register here and read more details below. Registration has filled up quickly and will be closing soon, as we must limit the event to 100 participants in accordance with CZI guidelines.
We also encourage you to fill out this short survey that will help us shape the activities of our COAD in San Mateo County, which we have established with the support of the local philanthropic, public sector, and nonprofit community. We are especially grateful to the CADRE team, our disaster preparedness counterpart in Santa Clara County, who has been providing weekly counsel and training to the Thrive team as we embark on this journey.
In Community,
Georgia D. Farooq, Executive Director

Launching San Mateo County Community Organizations Active in Disaster (COAD)
The pandemic has made crystal clear the value of preparation and collaboration during times of crisis. In light of this, Thrive is creating a network called a COAD (Community Organizations Active in Disaster) in San Mateo County. This COAD will enhance community resilience, facilitate communication, coordination and collaboration among nonprofit and faith-based organizations, government agencies, and the private sector during all phases of a disaster.
As a trusted network of over 200 nonprofits, Thrive is well positioned to support the mission of the COAD and coordinate among the nonprofit, government, and private sectors. With the financial support of the philanthropic community, we’ve taken on this role to strengthen the ability of San Mateo County to respond effectively to disasters. But we need your help!
Please complete the survey below to help us understand your organization’s needs and capabilities to prepare for and respond to an emergency (e.g. earthquake, wildfire, pandemic, etc).
We’re in this together and together we can do more!
Thrive Partners with the Grove Foundation and the County Elections Office To Improve Voting Access & Education
Last month, the Board of Supervisors presented the STARS Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award to the Voter Education and Outreach Advisory Committee (VEOAC) which Thrive co-chairs, along with the Voting Accessibility Advisory Committee (VAAC), the Language Accessibility Advisory Committee (LAAC) and the Elections Division. Thrive has been actively advocating for more inclusive voter engagement since 2017 when the Voter’s Choice Act was first adopted in San Mateo County. Thrive’s voter engagement work has three main goals: educate potential voters, register more voters, and increase voter turnout, especially in traditionally low civic participation populations.
Thrive's Primary Election Education Efforts Include Toolkit + Stipend
Thrive is proud to continue our nonpartisan voter outreach efforts, including offering a number of resources to the community.
Voter Outreach Toolkit + Stipend: Thrive has created a voter education and outreach toolkit that includes everything you need to talk about voting in a simple box (either electronic or physical, in Spanish or English). Get a toolkit and share it with your staff or community so they are empowered to hold gatherings to talk about why and how to vote. Each toolkit comes with a $1,500 stipend to support outreach and encourage participation.
Voter Outreach Materials – With Your Logo! Thrive is creating nonpartisan voter outreach and education materials that we can personalize with your organization’s logos!
Voter Outreach Training: Thrive will be hosting a training session to help nonprofits learn how to engage in voter outreach, including how to use the Voter Outreach Toolkit, on Wednesday, April 13, 10:00 - 11:00 am.
Vote by mail or at a Vote Center. Begin voting at Vote Centers on May 9. Three will open starting May 9; nine open on May 28; all 45 will be open June 4 – June 7.

Thrive Builds Cross-Sector Conversations to Address Collective Climate and Climate Justice Goals
Thrive has supported the environment and sustainability field in San Mateo County in our Environment & Sustainability Thrive Action Group (TAG) meetings, discussing Energy & Buildings in January, Transportation in February, and Environmental Legislation in March. Additionally, Thrive and SV2hosted SV2’s Get Proximate ++ event in Cooley Landing where we brought together five organizations that focus on environmental justice issues: Nuestra Casa, Rise South City, Climate Resilient Communities, North Fair Oaks Community Alliance, and Youth United for Community Action. These fantastic organizations presented on issues that they are currently working on that impact frontline communities, creating visibility around environmental justice areas, and the need for more resources.
Thrive will be hosting a county-wide, cross-sector, climate and environmental summit in August. Stay tuned for more details!
Expanded Partnerships With the County Office of Education and CBOs Providing Extended Learning
Our Children & Education TAG Peer Learning Series has featured important ELO & ARPA updates and a virtual meet & greet with Rubie Macaraeg, the Coordinator of Expanded Learning and Community Partnerships with the San Mateo County Office of Education. We engaged in conversation about how we can create a diverse pipeline of individuals interested in the education field and collaborate to build opportunities to create robust and thoughtful approaches to hiring and retention. The County allocated $10M from ARPA funding for summer enrichment program expansion for vulnerable/low-income students, including $4.6M in investments in children and families to help the child care field and $3.3M for 2022 Summer enrichment programs.
