Preparing for California Wildfire Season: Forest Management and Community Education

Wed, July 31, 10:00 - 11:00 am, Virtual

Join us for our July COAD meeting to discuss wildfire risk during California's driest months. With wildfire season upon us, community education on vegetation management and forest health has never been more urgent.

We are excited to welcome Timothy Federal, Manager of the San Mateo Resource Conservation District’s Forest Health and Fire Resiliency Program, and Cari Chen, Director of Innovation and Strategy at the Forestry and Fire Recruitment Program to discuss their work on wildfire mitigation and education. Our speakers will share their insights on ongoing local efforts to mitigate wildfire destruction and offer advice on how the community can proactively prepare for wildfire season.

Heat Advisory

An Excessive Heat Watch has been issued for the Bay Area from Tuesday morning (7/2) through Friday evening (7/5). Here are some tips to keep you and your community healthy during this time:

  • Protect yourself by drinking plenty of water, wearing light, loose-fitting clothing, and avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat.
  • Check on older neighbors, friends, and family, especially those without air conditioning.
  • Dress kids in lightweight clothing, encourage them to drink plenty of water, and never leave them unattended in a vehicle.
  • Ensure pets have plenty of water and a cool place to rest, and never leave them in a parked car. Walk your dogs early in the morning or late in the evening when it's cooler.

San Mateo County Supervisors Direct $3.3 Million to Support Early Childhood Education

In a proactive initiative, San Mateo County supervisors recently allocated $3.3 million in grants to bolster early childhood education in various communities. The grants, supporting The Big Lift program, aim to enhance kindergarten readiness and elevate third-grade reading proficiency in targeted school districts. This collaborative effort involves the County of San Mateo, San Mateo County Office of Education, and the San Mateo County Libraries, along with the backing of several public agencies, nonprofit organizations, and business groups. The funding, sourced from the Measure K half-cent local sales tax, has been distributed across multiple recipients, including school districts and organizations, to ensure children's literacy development from preschool to third grade.

Family Justice Center Survey

In an effort to establish a Family Justice Center (FJC) in San Mateo County, Supervisor Corzo, County Executive Callagy, DA Wagstaffe, and the Domestic Violence Council (DVC) have joined forces to develop a Strategic Plan. The County's Executive Office has contracted with the Family Justice Center Alliance to conduct an in-person study tour on July 11th and 12th to understand the available services for survivors of domestic violence, child abuse, and trafficking in the county. All nonprofits providing services related to domestic violence, child abuse, and/or trafficking are encouraged to participate. Additionally, any nonprofits that may encounter domestic violence, child abuse, and/or trafficking situations, even if it is not their primary mission, are also included. The goal is to create a draft Strategic Plan for the FJC's development, which will be presented to the County and its partners in October.
