Thrive RISE May Meeting: Community Strategies for High Heat Risk Reduction

In anticipation of high heat days this summer, COAD organizations will be sharing community needs and strategies for heat risk reduction in the communities they serve. Organizations are encouraged to come and share resources and best practices with one another. Representatives from the County of San Mateo Department of Emergency Management will provide updates on their strategies for reducing risk to heat and improving community messaging in anticipation of high heat days.
Affordable Power for All: A Guide to Enrolling Clients in Energy Discount Programs

Help clients reduce their energy bills! Learn about energy discounts and assistance programs, and how your organization can help clients access these services.
Join Thrive Alliance, Peninsula Clean Energy, and El Concilio of San Mateo County for an overview of these energy programs, basic eligibility requirements, and opportunities for further training. This workshop is designed for representatives of social services or community-based organizations serving low-income residents, and all are welcome to attend.
This session will explore how cultural humility is crucial for board governance in the longevity of a nonprofit's success by exploring the difference between cultural competency and cultural humility and sharing how nonprofit boards can navigate cultural dynamics through empathy. We will also discuss cultural arrogance, centering voices, representation -- do we have representation just for representation's sake? -- and application for cultural humility for long-term success.
Objectives
Clarify the distinction between cultural competency and cultural humility.
Identify whose voices are being centered and whose voices may be excluded in board discussions and decision-making.
Encourage participants to apply cultural humility principles within their board roles for more impactful and sustainable governance.

Supervisors Allocate $11.5M for Critical Next Step Toward Farmworker Housing
Half Moon Bay's Board of Supervisors unanimously approved an $11.5 million contract with Interstate Grading & Paving, Inc. for ground preparation on the Stone Pine Cove Farm Labor Housing Project, marking a vital step in providing affordable housing for low-income farmworkers. This collaborative effort between the County of San Mateo and the City of Half Moon Bay demonstrates a shared commitment to addressing urgent housing needs. With funding secured for 47 manufactured homes, including units for those affected by past tragedies, and an emphasis on promoting homeownership, the project signifies a comprehensive approach to housing security. Through efficient execution and transparent community engagement, Half Moon Bay aims to swiftly advance toward creating safe and affordable housing.

There will be a rally regarding the federal Victim of Crime funding cuts that will drastically affect Cora's services in San Mateo County for domestic violence, sexual assault, child advocacy centers, and elder abuse. Sanchez Art Center is hosting three exciting exhibitions. The main attraction, "Chromatic Edge," features vibrant color field paintings by visual artist Chandrika Marla that explore the essence of feminine existence. In addition, the center is showcasing "Prism Play," a display of colorful art quilts by members of the Northern California and Nevada region of Studio Art Quilt Associates, and "Myth & Magic," a group show presented by the Art Guild of Pacifica, featuring enchanting artworks ranging from paintings to jewelry. The exhibitions offer a diverse range of artistic expressions and are sure to captivate art enthusiasts.
Join Acterra and GreenTown Los Altos for the Plant Powered Summer Challenge and honor the Earth and your health. The challenge will last for the month of June and will focus on a plant-based dietary challenge. Participants will receive guidance on plant-based grocery substitutes, recipes to try with friends and family, zero food waste tips, and other resources. Top challengers will receive a special prize at the end of the challenge. Participants can choose the number of days they can commit to the challenge, whether it's once a week for meatless Mondays or the entire week. Acterra and GreenTown Los Altos will provide assistance in tracking success and encourage friendly competition among friends and family.
