October COAD Meeting: Introducing Issue Area Committees

Join us at Thrive RISE’s October COAD meeting for important announcements about the COAD’s trajectory in 2025. Director of Community Resilience Ana Miscolta will present updates on COAD meeting cadence for 2025, and changes to COAD meeting dates for the remainder of 2024. Nonprofits, congregations, and other community organizations with expertise or interest in disaster risk reduction are encouraged to attend and learn about opportunities to participate in the committees focusing on children and childcare; older adults and Access and Functional Needs (AFN); mental health and spiritual care; and food security.

Join the Effort: Applications Open for Measure W Citizens Oversight Committee
The Measure W Citizens Oversight Committee (COC) plays a crucial role in ensuring that tax proceeds align with the Congestion Relief Plan outlined in Measure W. Comprising 15 volunteer representatives from various community segments, the committee serves in an advisory capacity to the SamTrans Board of Directors. Its responsibilities include reviewing findings from independent audits, conducting public hearings, and providing annual reports to inform San Mateo County residents on the spending of tax proceeds. With terms lasting three years and approximately 3-4 meetings held each year, this committee is essential for maintaining transparency and accountability in the investment of public funds. Applications to join the COC are open until the end of October.
Overview of the San Mateo County Transit District Citizens Advisory Committee
The San Mateo County Transit District's Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) comprises 15 volunteer members who represent transit users and provide input on their needs. The committee helps inform the community about transit programs and advises the SamTrans Board of Directors. Membership terms last three years. Overview of the San Mateo County Transportation Authority and Citizens Advisory Committee
The San Mateo County Transportation Authority (TA) oversees transportation programs and projects in San Mateo County. It includes a 15-member volunteer Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) that serves as a link between the public and the Board of Directors, offering input on projects outlined in the Transportation Expenditure Plan. This plan governs the use of sales tax revenues from Measure A, approved by 75.3% of voters in 2004, and Measure W, which garnered a 66.9% approval rate in 2018.
San Mateo County Allocates $18 Million for Affordable Housing Initiatives
San Mateo County supervisors have directed nearly $18.5 million in federal funding to address local affordable housing needs, emphasizing the ongoing concern of housing affordability among residents. This funding, part of the American Rescue Plan Act, aims to develop affordable housing, enhance homelessness relief programs, and improve lower-cost housing options. Board Vice President David Canepa highlighted the importance of affordable housing in improving community quality of life, especially as inflation impacts residents' finances. A notable project, Belmont Family Apartments, will receive $9.5 million in ARPA funds to create 125 new affordable units by April 2024, including homes designated for formerly homeless veterans. In San Mateo County, a family of four earning $156,650 annually is classified as “low income” due to the high cost of living.

Youth Community Service and Anamatangi Polynesian Voices: Nightmare on Vote Street

Nightmare on Vote Street is a nonpartisan civic engagement event aimed at inspiring youth participation in the upcoming November 2024 elections in East Palo Alto. Organized by Youth Community Service and Anamatangi Polynesian Voices, the event features over 10 nonprofit organizations competing in a trunk-o-treat decoration contest, allowing participants to showcase their creativity while engaging with the community. Highlights include interactive activities like “Debate a Candidate” booths, a youth-led candidates forum, and a mock ballot casting for the People's Poll, all designed to foster stronger connections among the youth and candidates in the area.
The Youth Leadership Institute and Jefferson Union High School District invite you to a virtual Elections Townhall. This event aims to connect students, educators, and community members to engage with candidates and learn about the upcoming elections. The agenda includes welcome remarks, discussions on youth voices and the importance of voting, a candidate forum, and opportunities for students to discuss relevant issues. Your attendance can help foster civic awareness and encourage student participation.

San Mateo County Office of Education: 2024 FALL San Mateo Countywide Career Technical Education (CTE) Advisory Meeting
